Boston Tea Party Stamp Act - Free Essay Example

In the American history, a topic talked about in todays history would be the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party is when 92,600 pounds of tea were dumped into the Boston Harbor by Boston rebellions that decided to dress up as Mohawk Indians also known as the Sons of Liberty. The tea belonging to the British East India Company, this company has been one of the wealthiest companies in history since 1600-1858. In 1773, the Tea Act was involved and gave the East India Company a monopoly, which is the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service, so they can sell to the American colonies. The Tea Act became involved before the rebellions of Boston whom decided to dump the tea over into the Boston Harbor. Also, when the Tea Act was passed, American colonies did not get any taxes enforced on them. Before the Tea Act ever happened, the East India Company could only sell tea at in auction in London, this was a required because they could only pay a tax per pound of tea being sold, but this also added to their problems they were having with money. British markets would have tea available for colonists to purchase, this was before the Tea Act was passed or colonists would smuggle tea from markets illegally. Once stuff like this happened, they would transport the ships back for resale. This all happened before the actual dumping of the tea, in which it got its name the Boston Tea Party. One of the people that were involved in the Boston Tea Party was, Thomas Hutchinson who is the governor of Massachusetts and he was also known as the Chief Justice. He was known for having the ships stay in the Boston Harbor until the issue got resolved. Meanwhile, they had people offload the tea from the ships. Hutchinson was a man who devoted most of his time to business related things, such as joining the family shipping business, before beginning his career. He went to school at the Harvard College and graduated from there in 1727 where his career involved in local politics. Later on, Hutchinson got recognized by a lot by people following the war of King George which happened from 1740-1748. Other important people involved in the Boston Tea Party were John Hancock, a very wealthy man who lived in New England. As well as Sam Adams, a lawyer. Hancock was a man that ran a very successful import and export business that was located in Boston. When he was having people giving him thre ats about his business, he immediately joined the Son of Liberty as well as other groups. In the year of 1765, Hancock got elected to be selectman, a member of the local government board of a New England town. Interesting fact about all the tea being dumped over it took about three hours for about 100 people to dump out all the tea into the Boston Harbor because the chests had more than 45 tons of tea in them which today would cost about a million dollars. In 1774, the Coercive Act was passed which was also known as the Intolerable Acts. The act did several things such as close the Boston Harbor because they were waiting for all the tea that was destroyed to be paid for, Massachusetts Constitution ended, and so did the free elections of town officials, British judges and judicial authority were moved to Britain, which was because they were creating the martial law in Massachusetts. The martial law is a military government involving the suspension of ordinary law, colonists were required quarter British troops and if they needed, theyd use their private homes if they neede d to. Most people dont know what quartering is but its a punishment in England used for men found guilty of high treason. Men were either hanged, drawn and/or quartered. The other cruel punishment these men had to go through would be the full punishment which was having the victim dragged by a horse on a wooden frame to the place where he was to be publicly put to death. Protestant colonists were angered because under British rule, they extended freedom of worship to French-Canadian Catholics. For most people that learn about the Boston Tea Party would think that it happened once, but it didnt there was a second Boston Tea Party. On March 1774, 30 chests of tea were dumped into the Boston Harbor by 60 of the Bostonians. When this happened for the second time, it encouraged other tea-dumping. Some of the places it was taking place was South Carolina, Maryland and New York. Stamp Act Following the Boston Tea Party, there was another important event, the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a new tax saying that all Americans had to pay taxes for every paper that they use. What types of papers? Papers such as newspapers, licenses, etc. Playing cards were also taxed. The money collected went to all the troops that were guarding the American Frontier. There were 10,000 men guarding near the Appalachian Mountains were the American Frontier was located at. American s didnt like the standards it was setting. Colonists looked at the acted differently, they didnt think that it was right that the act was being used to raise money, they thought that it was supposed to be used to regulate commerce. Later on, Patrick Henry, an influential speaker was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1765. After being admitted, the news of the Stamp Act shortly was announced after Henrys arrival. Henry was one of the people that spoke against it. He was curious to know the reasons behind why Great Britain was taxing American colonists. Eventually came up with the Virginia Resolves, in which entitled Virginia citizens to the same rights as Great Britain. Also, said that an elected representative could collect the taxes and in Parliament, the colonists needed a representative and unfortunately did not have one. Henry concluded with having the House of Burgesses be the ones to collect taxes from the Virginia colonists. The House of Burgesses did all the resolving when there was a problem, but Henry was the persuasive speaker. Printed and distributed to the colonies and Great Britain were the resolutions. One of those resolutions were no taxation without representation. Many of the American colonists liked that idea. Forming the Stamp Act Congress, delegates from nine of the 13 colonies met in New York. Surprisingly, this was the first effort they made to coordinate and make an effort to protest how unfair management was by Great Britain. Some concern grew in the colonies because of the situation. So, to bring colonists together, the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to discuss their concerns with during the year of 1774. Speaking at the Second Virginia Convention was Patrick Henry where he said some of his famous words on March 23,1775. Henry was a very good speaker motivated men to take action. Henry was the man that never held a major national office during the war. He was one of many that was very doubtful for the efforts trying to create a strong federal government. Also, Thomas Jefferson, who served in the Virginia legislature and the Continental Congress and who, also was governor of Virginia disliked Patrick Henry, but even though he disliked him he said that he was the great est skilled public speaker that had ever lived.

As an alternatively certified teacher, I entered my first classroom teaching English II at a high school with only a couple of years of substitute teaching experience. But I knew I wanted to be an excellent teacher, for the sake of my students, and that I had a LOT to learn in a very short time. So I started talking to every teacher in my building who would listen and provide advice. I picked the brains of my department head, the English teacher down the hall, the librarian, the coach, the foreign language teacher, the 8th grade Language Arts teacher in the middle school building, the secretaries, the principal, and anyone else who I thought might be able to provide a piece of the  insight and perspective I knew I lacked. The following year, I taught 7th grade at a middle school built around the team concept. The teachers on my team and I all had the same lunch period, so we would meet in one of our rooms each day, discuss our triumphs and failures,   call parents, and generally support each other. This experience, along with the privilege of working with a special education co-teacher with more than 35 years experience, shaped who I am today as a teacher. At my current school, my department meets every Monday morning in a PLCs using a schedule our principal devised. Our grade-level teachers meet once per month. We meet in impromptu PLCs during the day, before school, after school — whenever we need to in order to work together, support one another, and enhance the learning of our students. Without those built-in professional learning communities, I would not have survived as a teacher. But that’s not all. As a former web design and hosting company owner, I  am most comfortable learning online. Anything I want to know is just a few keystrokes away. So naturally, I turned to the Internet to find answers I needed to my questions, and answers I didn’t know I needed to questions I didn’t even know I should have. During this process of educating myself as a teacher, I discovered #oklaed, and a group of educators who saw potential in me that I didn’t even know was there. Educational leaders who had not even met me provided support, encouragement, and the opportunity to use the strengths I have to help others. I am amazed by this community and privileged to be a part of it. I also want others to share in this experience, to grow as educators in the fold of the #oklaed community. Explore the ways Lennie is presented and developed in Of Mice and Men Although Lennie is among the main characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’, he is perhaps the least self-motivated. He experiences no significant changes, development, or growth throughout the novel and remains exactly as the reader encounters him in the opening pages. Throughout this essay I will be explaining the different aspects of his character. Although Steinbeck’s insistent foreshadowing of these characteristics makes Lennie a rather simple character, Lennie’s simplicity is essential to Steinbeck’s idea of the novel. Since the tragedy depends upon the outcome seeming to be expected, we as the reader must know from the start that Lennie is doomed, and must be†¦show more content†¦This extract clearly shows that he is unaware of strength and that he is confused to as why the puppy has been killed. Ironically, Curleys wife is attracted to him because of the violence he had shown in crushing her husbands hand. It is the threat of violence to be used against Lennie that causes George to take the final step of killing his friend. We can also see Lennie as a victim; this is perhaps the most interesting trait of his personality for lots of different reasons. Interestingly, the words used to describe Curley’s fighting and struggle seem to be more violent than Lennie’s aggression, making Lennie seem the victim. The onomatopoeia usage of words such as â€Å"slashed† and â€Å"crashed† create the idea that Lennie is the one being hurt in this situation. Cross sectioning, the same description technique is used when Lennie is suffocating Curley’s wife. Words such as â€Å"battered† and â€Å"writhed† are used to initiate that even though Lennie is the one hurting, he is the victim none the less. Furthermore, Steinbeck writes that â€Å"Lennie watched in terror† as Curley’s hand crushed under his own, showing that even though he is doing it, he can’t control himself and does not want to be hurting him. Instantly, because of the description of the wa y he is acting, we feel sympathy for Lennie, and not the person he has hurt. In the novel â€Å"Things fall apart† by Chinua Achebe we are introduced to a different Africa than most of us know. We travel back in time and go to the pre-colonial Africa, more specifically Nigeria, to a village known as Umofia where the Ibo people live. Achebe introduces us to this new world that was seen by the Europeans as an unsociable and savage place and shows that the African culture was destroyed by the arrival of the Europeans in that land. Another perfect example of women’s power is their emotional strength. This is not explicit in the novel but trough the reading it becomes evident how they overcome their status (or the lack of it) in society, mistreatment and other misfortunes – when, for instance, they give birth to twins and have to throw them in the Evil Forest –. Under these circumstances one has to be emotionally strong to survive and that is exactly what these women do. In chapter 10, a serious case of beating is brought to the egwugwu and the Evil Forest comes in the wife’s favor and says â€Å"It is not bravery when a man fights with a woman.†(page 66) Another proof of trust is the performances of women in farming, where they are designated to prepare the field for the yams in which if it is not done correctly the yams fail. This essay compares the print advertisements of two renowned companies of Japan, Toyota and Pepsi. The car manufacturer giant has been well known to offer its cars to various levels of consumers. The advertisements made by this organization always portray a clear message and creates a buzz in the market. On the other hand, the advertisement approach of Pepsi is different. The soft drink company always has to share the same message that says that Pepsi is the best product to quench thirst (Kim and Byungtae 2015). For the comparison and analysis of the advertisements of these two companies, print advertisement where women have been used as the models for the advertisements. According to Bhatt (2015), there are a number of advertisement techniques that the advertisers use at the time of designing an advertisement. Every bit of advertisement is portrait for a particular reason. The artists and designers put a lot into every bit of the advertisement. There always remains the strategy of mirror and window effect in the advertisement that eventually has effect on the viewers. In fact in the recent technologically advanced situation, communicating with people has become easier than ever. In the advertisement of Toyota, the role of women has been beautifully portrayed. The car manufacturer wanted to portray that they design cars for every section of the society. The advertisement very gracefully showed that the car is designed for the women working in the corporate world and also for those responsible women who has a family and children to take acre off (Toyota Outdoor Advert 2017). On the other hand, the advertisement of diet Pepsi shows a model holding a can of the diet Pepsi. There are no other elements that have been used in this advertisement. The colors used in the advertisement matches the color of the product. Very proactively, the blue color of Pepsi has been used for the dress of the model. There is only one statement used in the ad, Love every sip (Daisy 2017). This has clearly indicated the actual purpose of the ad that the soft drink replenishes the quench of thirst of the consumers. In this respect, it can be clearly said that the woman used in the ad does not personify a strong feminist character and perhaps it is a means of attracting people. The print advertisement of Toyota has been kept very simple where only the brands car has been used as the element. The logo of the car is present at the top left corner. The advertisement lacks any kind of info graphics. The target groups for this people are the working women who are capable enough to afford a car for them. Toyota indeed is supporting those women and helping them to achieve what they are craving for. This is indeed a drawback of the advertisement because if the ad included some kind of information, it would have been more accurate in it terms (Bhatt 2014). Similar comments can be made for the ad of Pepsi, The only comment that has been made in the advert was that Share the love with Sofia Vergara. This comment can be considered as a serious note where the aim of the advertisement is to attract consumers on the note that it shall provide them a chance to meet Sofia. The target group of people in this respect could be considered as both the women and men in the society mostly the youths. As commented by Willi et al. (2015), the aim of the advertisement designer always remains to attract more audiences towards the product. In order to do so, there are certain factors that play important role in shaping the advertisement. These factors are creativity, innovations and to certain extent feminist representation in the advertisement. This has always been fruitful for the advertisers to attract people. In the recent technologically advanced society and the increasing impact of the social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others, the opportunity of reaching out people has increased. Thus, designers are using different means to represent their ideas to the consumers. With the detailed analysis of the two print advertisements it has been cleared that the approach of the two companies was different. Both the companies have used women as the model for the endorsement but on a serious note, Toyota portrayed a more serious and sincere character of women and the responsibilities that they have to perform. On the other hand, Pepsi has used the model to attract more viewers. Thus, it can be clearly stated that the women have been portrayed differently in the advertisements depending on the designers concept. Depending on the concept of the designers, the advertisements are designed and are released to the world. This way the concept of mirror and window is fulfilled. The advertisements have been designed in the right way keeping the target group of people into consideration. This way these companies have been successful in creating buzz in the market.
